Hereford College of Arts has welcomed four practitioners to 2015’s Creatives in Residence scheme, which offers creative professionals the opportunity to access the College’s excellent facilities and liaise with staff and students on their own specific project.

This year we have mixed media Artist Lucy Baxendale,  Illustrator Katy Alston, printmaker Andrea Mclean, and dancer Chris Knight.

Applying to the scheme involved the artists submitting a proposal for a project that would further their own practice and that they could undertake and complete during the academic year, culminating in a group exhibition in April. Our Scheme is not just open to artists, but artists  in performance and music as well as visual arts.

Lucy will be mainly working in Ceramics working with different clay’s, textures and glazes to create an installation of different monsters & scenery. “I would like to further explore the world in my head. There are creatures there, who grow forests from their finger tips and out of their tails. There are ones that wear friendly masks to hide their threatening faces, and others have hands for feet. The reasons for these things are still unknown – like the founder of a new land I want to learn about and document everything here.”

You will find Katy mostly in the Print workshop exploring Linocutting and our Illustration department creating carousel books by creating the them in several pieces to be folded together.

Andrea will also be found in and around the print workshop, creating a map made from etched copper plates to celebrate the life and vision of Herefordshire poet Thomas Traherne.

Chris will be looking into the research and creation of a piece of choreography, and would like to look at the teaching of dance through the development of a pedagogical programme and can be found working in our Dance studio’s.

You will find our Creatives working across both our Folly Lane Campus and our College Road Campus, and are happy to talk about what they are creating!
