Taking Wool into the Future….

When you think of ‘wool’, ‘knitting’ and ‘art’ in combination do you think ‘yarn bombing’, ‘guerilla knitting’ and crochet animals? Well we want to challenge that view and get people thinking about Wool in a more contemporary way. Hereford Museum have approached us to get involved with an exhibition they are putting on about Wool.

They will be looking at the history of wool, its place in society, its properties and where is comes from. We however want to get people thinking about Wool as a material of the future.

Our 2nd Year students have been set the challenge of taking Wool jumpers and deconstructing and then reconstructing them. They have words such as emboss, slice, structure, portion, mould, reconstruct, attach, render, and extract to explore.

Using existing Wool jumpers as a starting point we want each student to produce a range of reconstructed garments for display.

So, watch this space as the project unfolds and please – if you have any old woolly jumpers that you can donate then please do! Just email me on e.greenacre@hca.ac.uk.
