Congratulations to Christian Vaughan Jones who is one of three Artist Blacksmithing students selected by the Fresh Air curators to exhibit this summer. The curators were very impressed with how Christian had used stone and steel together and commented on how innovative and exciting his proposal was. The piece that Christian has proposed to make for the Fresh Air exhibition is titled “Attaining Monumentality”. It will stand nearly two metres high and promises to be a challenge to make, transport and install! Watch this space…

Writing about his proposal, Christian says,

“My work explores the energy and controlled brutality of splitting stone, the moment of impact that cleaves the stone in two is captured within steel frames secured under tension with wedges, tie rods and pins. By exploiting the fractious nature of stone and the tensile strength of steel I create objects that deal with separation and unity, both brought about by material manipulation which is exhibited in a sculptural context beyond its utilitarian origins.”
