As one of Bill’s identified strands, he is testing how to surface his ceramic dogs. Whilst on the undergraduate course here at HCA, he explored a range of oxide washes and application of slips. This is an opportunity for him to explore a range of other sorts of finishes that add to the clay qualities and narrative of his ceramic dogs.

Currently he has taken to exploring saggar firing. Having made over one hundred and twenty very small dogs, he can now be seen in the ceramics department packing baked bean tins with one small test dog and anything from copper carbonate, salt, dog hair, sugar, cat food and the less appealing (and slightly smellier) sheep poo and sawdust, before firing at up to 1000 degrees.

I am really looking forward to seeing the results…
