Young Photographer Competition 2020 – Tips and Inspiration!

We have already received some great entries for this year’s Young Photographer Competition and can’t wait to see what else is to come!

We caught up with Oliver Cameron Swan, our Photography Technical Demonstrator, and Photography Short Course tutor at HCA to find out what his top tips are for capturing great photographs. At HCA, you’ll often find Oli in the studio, advising students on lighting and equipment, and all things digital photography! Outside of work, with over 21 years of experience, he is a freelance photographer with his own wedding and portrait business.

We hope Oli’s tips inspire your entries in this year’s competition!

Composition –

Consider the composition of your photograph. Think about everything you can see through your viewfinder when you are taking photographs. It is much easier to exclude something you don’t want in your pictures at this point, rather than trying to edit something out in Photoshop.

Expression –

Expression is everything. Expressions of emotion allow the viewer to connect with the subject of a photo. When taking photos of people you may have to be ready for a moment to happen, or ready to create one, in order to get the result you want.

Keep going –

Keep taking photographs! The most important tip I can offer you is to keep making images, the more you take the better your photography will be.
