Last week was a summative assessment for the Llantarnam Grange live brief. Having assessed the work, I wanted to show you a little bit more of Toby’s space and what he wrote about his vessel… “This is a piece that I call “The Vessel”.  It is an exploration of oriental form made from forged steel.

“This is a piece that I call “The Vessel”.  It is an exploration of oriental form made from forged steel. It is inspired by Japanese “Sekki” ceramics and the minimalist friction fitting joinery used in traditional oriental carpentry.

“The Vessel” is designed to show structure, balance and the beauty of minimal form.

The fold formed stands are intended to show a juxtaposition of soft and hard lines, a coming together that is frequently used in “Sekki” ceramics; the friction fitted connection between the dish and the stands is intended as a reflection of the precision of traditional geometry”.
