First years were having great fun at the forge last night. They had had to make three links of a chain as one of their technical exercises, and then the challenge was to test the strength of their welds, by using the hydraulic puller. If they broke under two tons, then the exercise needed to be repeated and they would have to remake the chain. Then, for a bit of fun, everyone put in a £1 and whoever’s chain was the strongest would win the money. It definitely increased everyone’s focus!

As you can see, Adrian was Master of Ceremonies, and every time a chain broke I jumped! Only two out of the eighteen students’ chains broke under two tons…the competition hotted up.

The proud winner, the man with the strongest weld was Arran Lang, whose chain finally gave way at 5.9 tons!  Close runner up was Joel Black at 5.2 tons. It was great fun with lots of joking. Chains clearly are only as strong as their weakest link!
