Our first year Artist Blacksmiths spend seventeen hours a week out at the forge. Three of these hours are spent in the fabrication and welding shop, and the rest of the time in the forge.

Students learn a lot of the craft skills of blacksmithing through demonstrations and making practice pieces, and they also have time to experiment and develop their own work alongside practice pieces.

Yesterday when I was at the forge, I took the opportunity to take a photo of Adrian Legge, who does the majority of demonstrations for the first years. You can see the students have got their technical books out and are writing notes to make sure they can go to their own forges and reproduce the pieces later on in the day.  As a team, we all believe in the importance of teaching the craft, teaching processes and skills, alongside exploring creativity and design.
