I am very excited to announce that I have been asked to deliver a research paper at this summer’s ABANA (Artist Blacksmith Association of North America) Biennial Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The conference is from July 13th-16th so I will be straight back on the airplane to make sure I am back for the students’ Graduation Ceremony on 21st July.

The theme for the conference is education and I will be talking about the programme here in Hereford, as well as sitting on several panel discussions about the future direction of contemporary forged metal design in Europe, and specifically the UK.

The conference organisers have invited myself, representing Hereford College of Arts, Professor Heiner Zimmerman, from the University of Gothenburg, Steneby and Rick Smith from the University of Carbondale, Illinois. Together we represent the three major centres at which you can study forged metal and design globally.

Last week saw our first Skype conference call together, as we plan the contributions each of us will make.

Looking down the list of Master Blacksmiths who are also demonstrating and presenting at the conference, there are a few familiar names: Jake James from Canada who has previously visited us in Hereford and is due to come back and work with our second years in just a few weeks’ time, and Robert Giordani from Italy who visited us just last week. It promises to be both an exciting conference and an opportunity to network.
