Far from an average Saturday! As Course Leader for Artist Blacksmithing, I was delighted to receive a VIP invitation to the British Ironwork Centre last Saturday, where a huge gorilla statue – made entirely of spoons – was being unveiled by Prince Michael of Kent. The gorilla was commissioned by Uri Geller and the plan is that it will be installed at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

It took 40,000 spoons to make the 3.6 metre statue, and the British Ironwork Centre received spoons from across the globe to go into the making of the gorilla. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the gorilla definitely had the shiny bling factor!

Clive Knowles, Managing Director, did a tremendous job of orchestrating the event. I love the fact that everybody had Union Jack dickey bow ties. It was just like you imagine a tea party at Buckingham Palace, but with lots of iron, ice cream, hog roasts, champagne, mammoth gorilla cake, the works!

You will see on the blog, that recently Rhian and Mike went to the British Ironworks Centre for their work experience, so it was also great to see their work displayed in the forge area. It really is quite a remarkable place and location and I am looking forward to working with Clive in the future.
