Narratives of Victorian memorial ideology has become the crux of the conceptual direction of Rebecca’s Black Boxes. The black box which forms the “container” of the memories, references the black box cameras of Victorian photographers. These deep framed boxes are covered in a linen canvas and painted black. The boxes will form the compositional format for her mixed media assemblages. Rebecca’s diverse and extensive sampling and experimenting with printing, etching, dipping, spraying and sandblasting takes place on a variety of materials including paper, metal, porcelain, cloth, glass and hair. The work is rich in it’s development of potential found and made objects, surfaces and fragments which will signify Victorian memorial ideology and social ritual.
