We have really enjoyed this year’s Design Brief from Margo Selby who is a long time supporter of the Course here at Hereford College of Arts. She sets a design brief every year to our 2nd Year students and this year it was a really inspiring and exciting project.

The students were asked to turn the design process on its head, quite literally. Taking inspiration from Cultural and World Textiles the students were asked to develop a range of manipulated samples using materials in innovative ways. They were then asked to draw from these before taking these drawings in to the IT Suites here at the college where they then transformed these drawings in to Digital designs using Photoshop and Illustrator.

The students were inspired by world textiles including African, Peruvian, Scandinavian, Indian, Aboriginal. Russian and much more. Students worked in weave, stitch, collage, knit, graphic, figurative, abstract and it was incredibly exciting.

We are in the process now of selecting work to send off to Margo for her to select her personal favourites and give feedback. For students to get this level of feedback from a designer at Margo’s level within the industry is an exceptional experience.

Thank you, as always Margo!
