We are already overwhelmed with the standard of entries for this years competition, it is great to see so many of you are exploring your creativity!
Remember – this year’s theme is BRAVERY so please don’t be frightened to enter the competition and show us your skills! Image above by Abigail Weaver, age 16.
If you are still working on your entry, below are a few handy tips to consider when composing your images – We have used entries from last years competition as examples…
1 – Background
Leylah Nash, age 16
Make sure your images don’t have unsightly objects in the background as it will pull the viewers eye from what it’s meant to be focusing on! Take a good look at your background before you take your shot and if possible, find a background that’s not so obtrusive, just like Leylah has done with this beautiful image.
2 – Cropping
Maisy Williams, age 16
If you do have a busy background try and crop your image tightly around your subject, this works particularly well when you are trying to capture emotion when shooting a portrait. Just like Maisy’s image above, even though the whole frame is full of cakes, as the viewer you are drawn to focus on the middle cake first.
3 – Symmetry
William Leitch , age 12
Filling your frame with a pattern that repeats will give your shot more impact. Shots where there is symmetry in them such as a long line of trees down one side, or a repeated pattern can be used to guide the eye to the single point. Williams amazing image above has symmetry and a repeated pattern!
4 – Take your time & enjoy yourself
Abigail Hitchcock, age 16
Photography is about capturing a moment and some times that takes time, so don’t rush yourself. Let the camera be your tool to express your ideas, and have fun!
