Congratulations to Ella Sibley Sparling, one of four BA (Hons) Contemporary Design Crafts students recently selected to participate in the acclaimed outdoor sculpture exhibition, Fresh Air. With this invitation comes a phenomenal opportunity for Ella, as her piece will be on display alongside works by prestigious makers from across the UK and abroad.

A balance of elements made in metal and glass, Ella’s collection of curved steel forms with red glass inserts invite the viewer to engage, be it via the suggestion of function as seating components or a desire to look more closely at the striking juxtaposition of materials.

Here’s Ella’s statement about her proposed Fresh Air piece, titled ‘Mangata’:

“Mangata is an interactive sculpture inspired by the negative geometric shapes found in a waterwheel. It is driven by the idea of reflection. Reflection of forms found in the garden, reflections within its metallic surface, and reflection of the sunlight through the glass. Together, these elements create a space to sit and ‘reflect’.”
