Congratulations to Ben Walker, one of four BA (Hons) Contemporary Design Crafts students recently selected to participate in the acclaimed outdoor sculpture exhibition Fresh Air. With this invitation comes a phenomenal opportunity for Ben, as his piece will be on display alongside works by prestigious makers from across the UK and abroad.

An outline of a cube composed in steel and wood, the jury was especially interested in the simple geometry and seamless transition between materials of Ben’s life-size form. Paying special attention to finish and scale, his piece can be appreciated as a frame for its surrounding landscape and a space to traverse.

Here’s Ben’s statement about his proposed Fresh Air piece:

“Inspired by the outdoors, this piece represents the balance between inside and outside. To be inside a form, yet still connect with the surrounding nature. Partially submerged, the piece invites viewers to re-examine the cube, and contemplate what we normally take for granted. Engineered, clean design carries the viewer’s eye around the piece as easily as it moves through air, not caring for the parameters or conventions of our world.”
