So this week sees the summative assessment of the first year’s Introduction to Specialist Processes Module.  This assessment represents their first semester working at the forge, creating practice pieces and recording forge demonstrations in their technical journals.

Those who have experience in the forge have cleanly forged and finished tongs, a Blacksmith’s helper and a series of punches and for those who are new to the forge there are almost finished tongs, some punches and quite a lot of burned pieces of metal!

The module ended with a short project all about connections. Exploring connections is key to working with forged metal and something the students will do throughout the course and onward into their career. The journey starts in this module with exploring how other materials connect, drawing in sketchbooks, examining how other people have connected materials and some initial experiments with connecting forged metal. Many more samples to follow…

Here are a few pictures of desks. Today they pack this away as tomorrow is the summative assessment for their drawing module. Well done, I can see how hard everyone has worked and applied themselves.
