The Diploma in Art & Design students have been continuing with their ‘Cold Dark Matter’ project down in the Folly Lane workshops. My last post showed the work they were doing in the 3D workshop. Since then the groups have rotated twice through Ceramics and Small Metals.

Some exciting things were happening in Ceramics with Rachael dropping clay from a height onto an object on the floor to see what would happen to the soft clay and how it would change.

In Small Metals it was different again…the students were working with small squares of metal and short pieces of wire and using processes that would alter the metal. Sometimes these changes were subtle and at other times they were drastic!

Ross used chisels to ‘stab’ the metal and punched holes and shapes using the Fly Press.

The way in which the students worked with the very different materials in the three areas has been fascinating.

It was a great introduction to the workshops and they were able to really get stuck in. Not only were they working with materials and processes they hadn’t used before, but they gained confidence and became familiar with the workshops.
