Elley Westbrook – Exhibition season in Hereford…September possibly my favourite time of year

I have had a rash of invites to Private views just recently as Hereford gears up once again for Herefordshire Arts Week. h.Art sees many arts and crafts practitioners across the county open up their studios or mount exhibitions. Its a wonderful week, well actually about 10 days, and it always amazes me just how many people get involved.

The staff at HCA have mounted their own exhibition to showcase the works produced by tutors, technical demonstrators and office staff who more often than not run a creative practice alongside their roles within the College.

I attended the opening of a friend of mine, HCA Alumni, Lois Karen Meicklejohn at the Old Mayors parlour in Church street. Also in the same show was Jess Bugler, print Tech Dem at College Road Campus. Alongside another lady, Janine Martin, they were the winners in the Old Mayors Parlour Competition to have expenses paid and venue provided in town.

Straight from The Old Mayors Parlour I hot footed it with my friend Monika to The Courtyard in Hereford to see a showcase of all the central Hereford artists partaking in this years h.Art. We bumped into the beautiful Gemma Moore along the way and spent a fabulous evening listening to her engage about her work.

She was exhibiting 3 photos taken from her final show at HCA. She passed her degree with a first and no wonder, her work is so impactful. Adopting a persona she raises the issues surrounding what it is to be a woman and the roles we play or are perceived as playing. Middle floor of the Courtyard…go and see it!

There is much to get your teeth into Arts wise in Hereford. It has been a busy few days getting back into the mind of a creative. Market Arts Studios have grabbed the ‘First Fridays’ initiative by the horns and are brining it to Hereford…Monika and I visited their studios on Friday…I’ll do a separate post about this to follow on from this one and couple it with a trip to Canwood Art Gallery. Both places stuffed full of ex HCA Mature students and current staff’s works.
