Thank you to everybody who has already entered the Brian Hatton Young Artist Competition, we are overwhelmed by the creativity of the work. With only a couple of weeks until the entry deadline, February half term is a perfect time to get creative and enter! We thought we would look back over the 2019 winners

Thank you to everybody who has already entered the Brian Hatton Young Artist Competition, we are overwhelmed by the creativity of the work.
With only a couple of weeks until the entry deadline, February half term is a perfect time to get creative and enter!
We thought we would look back over the 2019 winners for some inspiration!
Don’t forget, entries are also open for the HCA Young Photographer Competition!
Category 1 (ages 13-16)
1st Prize: Caitlin Smith
The judges loved Caitlin’s use of mixed media and commented that the use of text, colour and different materials is exciting, creating a pleasing aesthetic that is very original!

2nd Prize: Kiara Kenney
Kiara’s entry wowed the judges through its use of bright colours. They really liked the perspective, commenting that they could really imagine being in the room itself.

3rd Prize: Pippa Harris
The judges really liked Pippa’s clever use of materials combining a man made theme with nature. They were also very impressed with the subtle background colours.

Highly Commended: Zuzanna Bryzek
The judges really liked the modern twist on portraiture featured in Zuzanna’s entry. They commented on the brilliant attention to detail and clever composition.

Category 2 (ages 9-12)
1st Prize: Charlie Miller
The judges loved Charlie’s entry and commented on the amazing accuracy, energy and detail in his entry, stating that the birds are highly identifiable and very skillful!

2nd Prize: Ralph Warner
Ralph’s entry impressed the judges through its originality and use of vibrant colour. They loved the urban take on a landscape and commented that the piece is very refined and unique.

3rd Prize: Tessa Morgan
The judges commented that Tessa’s entry stood out as a unique piece of art within this category, being the only lino cut entry in the competition. They liked that the piece was landscape inspired and controlled well!

Highly Commended: Enalyn Nwakwu
Enalyn’s entry impressed the judges and they commented that the entry is very expressive for this age group with great attention to detail. The judges said that the entry is proportionally impressive and accurate.

Category 3 (ages 5-8)
1st Prize: Oliver Seekings-Jenkinson
The judges admired the ambition of Oliver’s entry, commenting that they loved the consideration from multiple disciplines and the playful elements of the piece, capturing an energy that children have when creating art, also taking current issues into account.

2nd Prize: Ekaterina Rooney
The judges were wowed by the quality of drawing in Ekaterina’s entry, as well as the attention to detail, marking making skills and interesting use of repetition with a reduced colour pallet.

3rd Prize: Evie Bobryzcki
The judges were excited by the use of narrative in Evie’s drawing – questioning who are the people on the mountain? They commented on the composition and attention to detail.

Highly Commended: Ava Bagley
Ava’s entry impressed the judges through its definite use of colour which they said was very bold and striking, making it stand out in this category.

Special Awards
Brian Hatton Award for Creativity: Jessica Morgan
Jessica Morgan won the Brian Hatton Award for Creativity in 2019 . The judges were impressed with the high level of skill and the very accurate use of colour, shadow and lighting. They commented that the work is incredibly effective and striking.

The 2020 competitions will culminate with a joint Awards Night and Exhibition Celebration with the Brian Hatton Young Artist Competition on 13th May 2020, 5.30pm at our Folly Lane Campus. All entrants are invited, along with family and friends. We look forward to seeing you there!
