We have had some great news, three of our current students have been selected to exhibit at the forthcoming Transition Exhibition as part of the Ypres 2016 Event to be held this autumn in Ypres, Belgium. In this blog we celebrate Arran’s success and find out more about the sculptural work that he has designed and made the exhibition.

The work is titled: ‘The Other Side’  articulating the ideas and processes used Arran says :

“This piece of artwork has been designed to take the generalised notion of transition and represent it through the idea of a sculptural gate. This in turn is to further delve into the portrayal of a concept. The concept that we often ‘forget’ the uncomfortable side of war and what it was we had to go through in-order to achieve victory. The sculpture itself represents the want and need for Prisoners of War to escape their captivity. It is there to invoke the viewer into thinking more deeply about the ‘Other Side’ of war, rather than what it is more commonly instilled in us to remember.

I have chosen to create this piece by not forming the sculpture beforehand, but to fracture the piece after the making. This is to create both the visual aspect I am looking for but also to further the meaning of the piece itself. The ‘breaking’ of the sculpture will be done with minimal heat and a 20 tonne farm machinery jack.”
