This morning started with a trip to Hereford Galvanisers in the College’s Luton van with Alex Sellers’ railing rattling in the back. Alex is one of our third year students whose work is inspired by his fascination with a range of mechanical components that he has researched from the industrial revolution.

This year, as well as the railing, he has been designing and making products for interiors including companion sets with coal tongs, brushes and shovels. He has decided that to emphasise that industrial heritage, the surface of the railing should have a rich, rusted quality- hence our trip to the galvanisers where it was soaked in pickle overnight! We will pick it up again on friday before Alex buffs up and seals the surface with renaissance wax. It’s always a little nerve racking, to leave work with the galvanisers, as they lurch towards the back of the van with a fork lift after all those hours of working and forging. We can but hope that they don’t drop or squash it!
