In early March BA (Hons) Textile Design escaped from the beast from the east and several inches of snow in Hereford to visit the beautiful city of Lisbon, one of Europe’s oldest cities. We had the pleasure of being inspired by azulejo-covered townhouses, cutting edge museums, legendary yellow trams, a shot of ginjinha and a pasteis de nata or two.

Textiles students at Feira da Ladra “Thieves Market” the oldest and the most vibrant flea market in Lisbon and specialising in antiques and second hand items including textiles and yarns.

Museu Nacional do Azulejo, The National Tile Museum charts the development of Portugese tiles from the 16th century to the present day. The building a former convent from 1509 is as beautiful as the Azulejo’s within. On the ground floor is the baroque church a riot of colour with vibrant paintings of saints and blue and white tiles displaying bucolic pastoral scenes.

And of course we finished off our visit with a coffee and another Pasteis de nata.

Beautiful colours everywhere.

Thank you for having us Lisbon, until the next time….
