John is one of our third year Blacksmiths and has been working on a gate inspired by his home town and the folk song, Scarborough Fair. After weeks of forging individual components, now is the time to cold fix it together. It’s always quite an intense time, as you have to make sure you drill or punch the holes in the right places and there is always a chance of a cumulative error, so John has fastidiously drilled and bolted.

Here he is having some last minute tips from tutor, Tony Ingarfield, before progressing to hot riveting the gate together.

Final fixing is guaranteed to take twice as long as you ever could have imagined and John’s gate is no exception, although I am delighted to say that it was completely finished before summative assessment.
