Huge thanks to all the amazing second-year GMD students at HCA for producing such rich material on a one-day project to respond to Race Equality Network’s Race Equality Week 2022.

We spent yesterday printing out and putting up student work at College Road Campus library, and it looks great! Designs selected to be printed out as A2 posters were from Sadie Griffiths, Elise D’Arcy, Tina Ellicott, and Matt Pye. We were particularly impressed with the depth and subtlety of these responses, which provided excellent visual communication around some of the research findings around inequality in the creative industries showcased on the IncArts website and Race Equality Network website.

Particular thanks must also go to Harry Woodhouse for his wonderful and subtle use of gloss print on matte black paper, which shows us ‘invisibility’ as well as describing it.

We were impressed by the in-depth research of Zen Mollart and Euan White (both of which showcased black graphic artists, in both a personal homage and to highlight their work to others), Tom Ablett’s clever and engaging graphic, which asks the reader to interact with the image, Robyn Dane, Luke Prescott and Seren Morgan’s clear graphic messaging, and Roux Jordan’s embracing of visual complexity. We loved Tina Ellicot’s inspirational poster, too, and hope that we can get that on display soon.

Thanks again all, for helping HCA think about Race Equality for Race Equality week 2022. Particular thanks must go to Innes Jones, course leader for BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design, and Alison Eddy, Module Leader for Professional Practice for their hard work on this project. We’ll look at Fine Art Students’ responses to the same brief later this week.
