This week saw the introduction for the second year module: Design Development.  Every year we re-write the project brief and this year we decided to start the module with a visit to the Pitt Rivers and Ashmolean Museums in Oxford.

The module introduction included several taught sessions interrogating different ways to undertake object-based analysis using the Gillian Rose and Jules Prown models. While in Oxford, students were asked to select two objects that visually inspired them and to then use either the Gillian Rose or Jules Prown model to research, investigate and interrogate the object fully. The intention of using this research is to generate ideas for a body of work in the module.

Both the Pitt Rivers and Ashmolean are extraordinary museums, brimming with a multitude of objects and artefacts to choose from. Initially, many students found it a real challenge to make their selection but by the end of the day everyone had made clear choices. They now have a week to further investigate and research the objects they have chosen before giving a presentation to academic staff and their cohorts about their findings.
