As if the recent expedition to Berlin (for some) and the Arts Mundi exhibitions in Wales (for all) students wasn’t enough, the Foundation Diploma and Portfolio Course students are just back from a joyful overnight visit to the magnificent northern capitals of Liverpool and Manchester.

Some students are pictured below making themselves very much at home in Tate Liverpool’s current ‘Living Room’ exhibition.

Following our calming visit to Tate Liverpool, where we were exposed to the powerful placement of the work of Turner Prize nominee Cathy Wilkes and the ethereal paintings and surreal etchings of Leonora Carrington, we headed to a wet and windy Crosby beach.

Who wouldn’t want a bracing stroll to admire, photograph, draw (and get some selfies with) the Anthony Gormley sculptures on the beach and in the sea?

All students had the opportunity to explore the exciting nightlife on offer in Liverpool before retiring to the hostel for a good sleep ready for an early start to head for Manchester the next day.

The students and staff all did as the title of the show at Manchester’s new 15K development of the  Whitworth Gallery suggests and did indeed ‘Fall in love again’ with the volume and quality of the work on show including: A major solo show by Cornelia Parker, the subtle prints of German artist Thomas Schutte, looking through the star struck lens of photographer Johnie Shand Kydd, experiencing the gunpowder installation of Cai Guo-Qiang, enjoying the playful work of Sarah Lucas and returning to an explosive exhibition of work from the 1960’s before heading home to HCA.

Some students enjoyed the work so much that they returned to Manchester the very next day on the train for another look. Inspirational times on the course and offering the students increased contextual awareness as they head towards their final project – we can’t wait to see the results.
