This week, we have been assessing 3DSP, a Level 5 module on our BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing degree course. Its full title is Three Dimensional Specialist Processes, and it’s a module where students continue to produce practice pieces in terms of improving their techniques and skills in blacksmithing, alongside taking on a technical project related to their emerging practice.

I just wanted to blog this picture of the chisels that Mike made for his 3DSP technical project, as he took on exploring forging animal heads.

Tooling is such an important part of what blacksmiths need to do to move metal in the way they want to, and this display with a sample bar underneath showing the marks that each chisel makes, is a great example of tooling up.

I am sure that Mike will be using these tools a lot as his work develops.
