The Llantarnam Grange and Little Dewchurch live briefs are both part of a larger Design Development module for our second years.

In the Little Dewchurch live brief Joel chose to focus on replicating Preedy’s flower motif as a rivet detail in his handrail design, this meant lots of exploration using the power hammer and thoroughly tooling up. He chose to build on that knowledge for the Llantarnam Grange live brief and has continued using the power hammer and his newly made punches to develop a range of small vessels.

You can really see the way that the metal has moved and distorted and he has emphasised the difference between the internal and external shape by applying gold leaf to some of the insides of the vessels. I think they are really exciting and exquisitely made.

This module has opened up so many possibilities and it’s great to see how the two live briefs have pushed him in different directions. I’m looking forward to seeing how he develops his emerging practice in the next module.
