Designer Laura Thomas Lecture and Visit

We were very thrilled to host the Welsh Designer Laura Thomas this week for a lecture and tutorials. Laura is best known for her weave/resin work where she traps beautifully woven yarns in resisn and sets them as blocks.

But we soon learnt, in her fantastic lecture, that there is much, much more to Laura that resin blocks. She is a superb designer of woven blankets, concept pieces, architectural installations and public art pieces. Her portfolio is diverse and intensely exciting. The way she works with materials and textiles is inspirational, to see and hear how she combines textiles with plastics, glass, metals, stone is very thought provoking.

The lecture was very well attended by students from across the college, many of whom may well have grumbled at the thought of attending a ‘textile’ lecture but they were soon bewitched and drawn in to the work and to Laura’s approach to materials.

After the lecture Laura showed her portfolio to the Textiles Students and they had the opportunity to handle her work personally and to see it close at hand. Of course, with textiles the touch is so vital. After lunch Laura then spent a great deal of time with our weave students from the 2nd and 3rd years who all gleaned a huge amount from her years of experience.

Thank you Laura – we can’t wait to have you back here again!
