We have nine MA Contemporary Crafts students and over the next few blog posts I’ll be introducing them to you all.

Reflecting on Part 1 – Beginning approaches Wilna writes :

“For the beginning of this project I am looking at the sea/water as my starting subject. It has a strong relationship to my work in that you have to look below the surface to see the beauty and detail captured within. With my pieces, I aim to make something that is deceptive to the eye due to the reflections and illusions caused by the clear resin combined with the reflective materials stitched and woven inside. Many people have vivid memories or personal emotions when at the seaside: staring into the water, whether it’s calm as glass or chaotic and lively.

Through my MA I want to discover why people feel these emotions at the sea; whether or not there is a spiritual element or if its purely the enchanting characteristics and visual sight of the sea. I want to create work that has the same descriptive words of the sea such as enigmatic and powerful, however I also want people to ‘feel’ that calm, safe feeling when they wear my handmade jewellery.

I am to develop my skills with new and old materials, adapt my theoretical knowledge and understanding of my subject as well as improving the standards and quality of my work throughout this MA course in Contemporary Craft”.
