Environmental artists Red Earth collaborated with Hereford Art College to build artwork at The National Trust property, Berrington Hall, near Leominster. 10 selected Level 5 and 6 Fine Art students collaborated with environmental artists Red Earth, to create a landscape sculpture ‘Circling the Vale’. ‘Circling the Vale’ responds to renowned 18th century landscape designer ‘Capability’ Brown. Capability Brown transformed the face of landscape design with his unique, elegant style in large-scale landscape designs for parks and gardens of many of the nation’s grandest country homes. The project was supported by CB300 (the Capability Brown Festival) which celebrates the 300th anniversary of Lancelot Brown. ‘Circling the Vale’ is also part of  Trust New Art, the National Trust’s contemporary arts programme in partnership with Arts Council England, to inspire people of all ages to see and enjoy National Trust places in a new way through the eyes of contemporary artists.

The workshop was the perfect opportunity for the Level 5 and 6 students to breathe in some fresh country air, and to work together with ‘Red Earth’ to accomplish the designer’s vision of the Landscape piece. It challenged the students to respond creatively in an open space, to experience the working process, and methodology of environmental artists.

Together they cleared obscuring plants, stripped and felled trees to create an open space to produce a circular form in the heart of the woods. ‘Circling The Vale’ allows visitors to view the open space clearly, leading to an elegant suspended greenwood installation. The piece is inspired by eighteenth-century landscape design with contemporary elements.

Don’t forget you can visit ‘Circling the Vale’ at Berrington Hall Herefordshire, and experience for yourself the contrast of the work of Capability Brown versus landscape art with a more modern twist.
