We have had some really interesting conversations in tutorials this week about the role and potential of contemporary craft practice and conceptual practice. What is the relationship between concept and craft object? Have they got an equal partnership? Does the status and power of one have president over the other? Have they got a hybrid identity? Is the quality of construction and production, technical skill and craftsmanship of the object still critical to the realisation of conceptual craft?

Other conversations pondered the relationship between the object and it’s physical context – the place or space it is located in or occupies. How critical is this location, space or context to the object’s  aesthetic and conceptual narrative and identity? How is the viewer invited to engage with the object and how does the location and context of the object impact on this engagement?

Lots of reading, thinking and making ahead…
