This week saw the first of our workshop rotations with the Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design students.

It’s an exciting project entitled ‘Cold Dark Matter’ which explores change within materials such as wood, metal and ceramics.
The students began their research by watching a YouTube video showing the work of Cornelia Parker and how she alters the objects and materials she uses. They then put their research into practise in the workshops.

The images show the 3D group experimenting with a piece of pine braced between a vice and a handmade wooden lever. Ian and Wyatt turned the lever to see what would happen to the piece of wood. It was fascinating to watch the wood twist and hear it squeal under the mounting stress. And as the images show it eventually broke into two pieces.

It was a new and refreshing way of looking at materials and how they react and change and gathered a good crowd!

The Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design students will return over the next two weeks to continue their experimentation in Small Metals and Ceramics and I will keep you posted on the results.
