What a busy week- external visits, a great Gravity lecture by Silvia Weidenbach plus everyone having their photos taken by photography students for a documentary project and assessment feedback!

One of the highlights of the week however had to be the session on sharing practice and methodological approaches. Three MA students- Wilna, Alex and Bill talked about how they had used research by practice methodologies in the module PG Developing Practice. Each student had established individual responses to documenting this data. Wilna is working in sketchbooks and files linked to research strands and her thorough, systematic and highly visual and creative approach is married with indepth academic information, written reflections and technical notes.

Alex is working digitally by photographing prototypes made at the forge and reflecting on the process of product development and problem solving. Bill has developed a ‘Dog Diary’ which contains his drawings, photographs and interviews of dogs and their owners which he is using as primary research material for his ceramic dogs. He has also established a really practical approach to developing his research diary- he is making weekly entries using PowerPoint slides to format image and text, recording what he made and reflecting on what has been achieved, what problems have arisen, how he has overcome them and ways forward- plans for next week. His literary review file is also inspiring- he reads and highlights the key ideas in the academic journal articles and them uses an A4 proforma to record the journal reference, a dictionary of technical terms and his own summary and notes from the text ie. useful concepts, quotes and technical ideas. Thank you Wilna, Alex and Bill for leading this session.
