Huge thanks to Maren and Tom from the Association of Learning Technology (ALT) whose visit to HCA on Wednesday to offers us an exciting opportunity to design some analogue artefacts for their Learning Technologist of the Year awards 2018.

What is ALT?

ALT is a hugely diverse and very inclusive organisation. It has an international membership whose interests and activities are wide-ranging. This is reflected in the ALT values which are all about collaboration, openness, participation and independence.

This first commission is a quick-fire project to short making deadlines. Maren and Tom outlined the project to a select group of undergraduate students. These were mainly from our Contemporary Design Crafts B.A (Hons) course, but with notable appearances from Textiles B.A (Hons) and Fine Art M.A students.

The design brief

Our students will sketch out some design ideas for 12 similar artefacts. Each artefact must mention ALT, include the colour green and have 2018 incorporated into the design.  Course leader Helen Marton and lecturer James Smith will shortlist viable, exciting designs and present these to Maren and Tom for the final decision.

Why is 2018 important?

ALT will present these as prizes to national and international learning technologists who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in their field.

This commemorates ALT’s 25th anniversary. ALT continues to grow as an independent organisation. which supports learning technologists across the globe and works at the forefront of research into this emerging discipline.

The Awards

The Awards will be presented at the Gala Dinner of the ALT Annual Conference in September 2018 at the University of Manchester, UK.

The student designer of the winning commission will be part of this ceremony.  This is a tremendous opportunity for our undergraduates to explore how digital interacts with analogue and connect with the ALT community.

We hope very much that this opportunity will be the start of a developing relationship between HCA and ALT.  I’m very excited to see our students designs and to be part of the judging panel for the Learning Technologist of the Year award.
