Advance Processes – Gabe Chaille

ABAP is a second year module which is focussed on students exploring and testing a specific forge process and annotating, analysing and evaluating their findings in a technical journal. Gabe tackled edges, lots and lots of different edges! Each one labelled, annotated and evaluated with both the temperature and number of heats and time taken.

Gabe tackled edges, lots and lots of different edges! Each one labelled, annotated and evaluated with both the temperature and number of heats and time taken. This is a very useful piece of research that I know he will refer to in future modules.

Gabe saysin his evaluation:

“My Advanced processes was all about exploring different ways of manipulating the edges of steel plate. This focus was an extension of my project for Llantarnam Grange gallery where I fashioned a vessel from steel plate but did not have time to give proper consideration to the edge finish. In this exploration not only did I find an appropriate finish for that project, but I ended up with a number of samples that lead into other areas of exploration. All of the samples were recorded, detailing the tools and process used, the time it took to make, and all the constants. I then selected the samples that I thought were most successful, talked about why I liked them and possible avenues for further exploration including the next step which was to try the process in a larger stock size. This exploration has been immensely helpful to my own development as an artist and I plan to use this system of discovery in the years to come”
