We are proud to be one of the first Textiles courses in the country to explore the emerging field of Colour, Material and Finish (CMF) prompting innovations in materials, technologies and surfaces to merge in a more thoughtful approach to colour design.

This semester we introduced our first CMF projects set by industry partners highlighting the rise of CMF design as a professional discipline with employment opportunities in automotive and aviation, amongst other industries.

In October CMF designers Sammie Mayers and Kate Webster from Envisage Group Ltd a bespoke engineering services company based in Coventry visited the College and gave an inspiring talk on what it is like to be a CMF designer. The designers explained that CMF is focused on emotive aspects such as soft value cues and the aesthetic experience of products and the significant use of textiles making colours softer, richer and deeper.

Before leaving they set our final year students a project examining the qualities of three ‘unusual’ materials of their own choice . Our students will be presenting outcomes of this work to Envisage Group Ltd in the New Year. We cannot wait to see the final outcomes!
