AS you know the 1st years have been doing a Drawing Module since they started back in October and this week we looked at colour.

The first exercise was to look at words which describe colour. At the end of the day red isn’t just red is it? It is poppy, carmine, scarlet, rose, blood, magenta etc. Then we all scoured the college (and yes the bins!) for as many different items in different colours that we could. The results were stunning, a table full of colour.

The best part was that from this simple exercise we could have put together so many stunning colour stories of our own. This is such a great thing to do if you are starting a project and you are stuck on colour – it helps to focus your eye and really get you looking, closely, at colours.

Then the students were tasked to complete a temperature colour wheel and colour charts mixing gouache primary colours together. The students ended up with a colour compendium for their folders, one which I hope will stay with them as designers throughout their career as mine did that I completed many years ago on my Foundation course in Bristol.
