A curated exhibition of Contemporary Craft, Jewellery, Textiles and Artist Blacksmithing in response to the Hereford Cathedral opened to the public this weekend.

About the exhibition

REINTERPRET is an annual collaboration between Hereford Cathedral and degree students across four courses within the School of Materials and Design at HCA. The public-facing show provides the Level 5 students across Artist Blacksmithing, Textile Design, Contemporary Design Crafts and Jewellery Design the chance to research and respond to elements found within The Cathedral.

Their final work is then installed for a public exhibition located within the Crypt and entrance to the Lady Chapel at the incredible historic building - whose origins date back to the 7th century.

What our students say

Exhibiting at the Cathedral feels like completing the circle, taking the work back to its origins. It is a very special environment. Exploring how to display individual items, as well as the whole curation in a specific environment gives further depth to the learning process!

Katy Jones, BA(hons) Contemporary Design Crafts

I found the whole exhibition very exciting. From the first look around the Cathedral, to the exhibition day all the staff were incredibly supportive and enthusiastic about my design. They also pushed me where ever possible to expand my skill set. I feel so lucky to have been able to take part in this beautiful and meaningful event.

Helen Ackerman, BA(hons) Artist Blacksmithing

For many students, this is their first experience of exhibiting their work. The exhibition also marks a halfway point in their academic career at HCA; a significant moment in which they begin to look ahead to the second half of their degree.

Following a packed Private View last week, 'Reinterpret' now runs from 30 January - 23 February. For more information on how to visit - including opening times and accessibility information - use the link below.

The School of Materials and Design is a collection of undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Hereford College of Arts. Ranging from heritage craft to contemporary design, these hands-on courses support students to refine and master their own individual practice by developing technical skill and an original approach to design.
