After completing his Foundation Art and Design studies in Liverpool, Dermot studied BA (Hons) Technical Illustration and Graphic Design at Lancaster University. On graduating, Dermot worked as a technical illustrator for a worldwide marine technology company, leaving to work in mental health and focusing on art therapy. He left to pursue his career in Graphics and Illustration, working for an advertising and architectural visualising company in Liverpool.

Alongside teaching at HCA, Dermot works as a freelance fine artist and graphic designer, working both digitally and traditionally to commission, with specialist areas in illustration, graphics and fine art. He is always keen to include HCA students to assist in completing commissioned work when possible; he is passionate about teaching the creative process in general and developing students practical skills for employment.

In the last few years Dermot has exhibited work in a variety of galleries and events. He also works as a singer songwriter in his spare time.
