Explore the art of creative writing in this short course, covering storytelling, poetry, and expressive techniques. Perfect for beginners, you'll develop your unique voice, craft vivid imagery, and experiment with words to bring your ideas to life.

Overview

Whether you're a curious beginner or looking to strengthen your skills, this short course will give you a welcoming space to experiment with language and explore a range of creative writing styles.

We will look at a variety of forms, including prose fiction, poetry, memoir, and script. We will also consider how we look at the world as writers, and how writing intersects with music, visual art, and place. Through exercises, discussion, and supportive feedback, you'll discover your unique voice while learning to craft compelling work.

From constructing believable dialogue to finding your poetic rhythm, each session is designed to inspire new ideas and help you build confidence in your writing.

A girl is looking off-camera to the right, smiling. She is sat at a desk with writing books in front of her. She has pink hair styled in space buns. Next to her, a man with glasses is sitting back in his chair and also looking off-camera. They are both sat in front of bookshelves, in a library.
Two women sat at a desk in a library, surrounded by bookshelves and plants. In front of them are stacks of books and open notebooks that they are writing in. They are talking to one another and smiling.
Four female students sat around a long table in a library with plants in the centre. They are smiling and talking to one another. The room is colourful and bright.
A man and a woman both sat at a desk, concentrating on books in front of them. They are writing in the books on the desk, and the lady is resting her head in her hand.
Three students are sat together in a library. They are surrounded by plants, and two of the students are smiling and talking to one another.

As a tutor, I found Kate Garrett inspirational. Her approach to teaching aspects of creative writing was structured and informative. The workshops provided the opportunity for all to engage equally and share experiences in a non threatening manner. Thoroughly enjoyed the course and learnt so much courtesy of an enthusiastic tutor, whose support was limitless.
