A hands-on workshop introducing the essential techniques of silversmithing and jewellery making. This immersive course will guide you through the skills needed to cut, shape, solder, and finish your own beautiful silver creations.

Dive into the art of silversmithing in this intensive 2-day course. Through expert demonstrations, step-by-step tutorials, and hands-on practice, you’ll learn essential techniques including etching, enamelling, forming, texturing, and crafting your own stacking silver ring.

Gain confidence using professional tools and workshop equipment as you develop the skills to create unique, personal pieces.

About the Tutor

Nicola Lillie is a multi-disciplinary lecturer and maker, and former contestant on the BBC jewellery design show All That Glitters. Nicola joined HCA as a lecturer in January 2024, and teaches into our BA Contemporary Design Crafts, BA Jewellery Design and BA Artist Blacksmithing courses. Nicola holds a First Class Bachelor's Degree; a Master’s Degree with Distinction in Contemporary Crafts and has owned her contemporary jewellery business, Nicola Lillie Design, since 2015.

All materials will be provided including copper to practice, silver, tools, and more. 

You may want to bring a sketchbook for taking notes. 

Make sure to bring some water, and dress appropriately for using college equipment (for example, no open-toed shoes, long hair tied back when using workshop equipment, and avoid flammable fabrics)

This masterclass will be held at our Folly Lane Small Metals Workshop.

This course will run across two days, 7th and 8th August. 

The workshop will start at 10am and finish at 4pm each day. You may need to arrive earlier than 10am on the first day of the course for registration. You will be emailed about this once you have booked onto the course. 

This course is suitable for anyone over the age of 16.

We recommend that attendees between the ages of 16 and 18 are accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also a paying participant. 

This course is aimed at complete beginners, but will also be suitable for people with some silversmithing experience who would like a refresher. 

We keep our class sizes small so that you benefit from a lot of contact time with the tutor. There will be a maximum of 10 people attending this masterclass. 

Yes, there will be a 45 minute break for lunch. Unfortunately, our on-campus cafe won't be open during this time, but there is a corner shop just across the road from the campus where you can buy lunch, or you can bring your own.

Light refreshments such as tea and coffee will be provided.
