Everything you need to know to apply for a Masters course at HCA.
To get started simply download our MA application form, compete it and email at it back to us at registry@hca.ac.uk.
If you would like to set up an informal chat to discuss entry requirements or your fit for the programme, you can contact our admissions team through the same email address.
MA courses are self-initiated, and we ask all applicants to submit a short proposal of up to 500 words, detailing a proposed programme of study.
We will also ask you to supply a portfolio of current practice, which will form the basis of discussion within the interview.
We will provide some basic guidance for both, but you can also contact the course leader directly if you have any questions about the process.
Interviews will be held by the MA course lead, and are an opportunity for you to discuss your proposal and portfolio in detail.
Applicants should have an advanced understanding of their particular discipline and be able to demonstrate their ability to sustain research at MA level. However this knowledge may come from practice or academic qualifications. The interview is an opportunity to discuss your experience to this point.
MA applications aren't processed through UCAS so we are happy to accept applications throughout the year.
The majority of applications are made through the Autumn and Spring terms. We will accept applications through the summer, however there may be more limited availability for interview dates.
Applicants should be (or about to become) graduates. Preference will be given to good honours graduates although exceptional applicants from a non-academic background will also be considered.
Professional designers, makers, craftspeople and fine artists who wish to reposition their practice may also qualify.
Applicants should have an advanced understanding of their particular discipline and be able to demonstrate their ability to sustain research at MA level. This can be explored at interview, and we would still encourage you to apply.
We believe in making higher education and careers in the arts more accessible to more people.
We look for your passion and your potential, as well as looking at your past grades. We have to assess every applicant's potential to succeed on their chosen course - but we do that in different ways, with portfolios, auditions and interviews all potetnial parts of the process that allow you to showcase yourself in a different way to an application form.
We will consider all applications in a fair, transparent and consistent way, and we have a procedure in place to allow applicants to make an appeal against a decision.
To help support student through the process we offer prospective students an pre-application advisory meeting, on an informal basis.
You can also attend Open Evenings, or contact our teams via email - but if it would help to speak to the team in person before you apply you can contact Dawn or Leon in our Admissions Team on 01432 273359, or e-mail them at registry@hca.ac.uk for more details.
All our MA programmes are 12 or 15 month degrees. We do not currently offer a part-time, two year course.
Unfortunately we can not currently accept international students onto our MA programmes.
If you completed a course at HCA within the last two academic years, you are eligible for an Internal Progression Bursary of £650.
If you qualify, email registry@hca.ac.uk to claim your bursary.
We host Open Evenings through the Autumn and Spring terms. These are a chance to visit the campus, tour the studios and workshops with the course leader and sit down with staff to discuss the details of the course. We publish dates through the year, and you can attend before of after you apply.
