Why did you choose HCA for your degree?

As someone who has suffered from social anxiety and had Selective Mutism for most of my life, the thought of studying at a bigger institution was daunting.

When I came to an open day at HCA, I had the sense it had a close-knit community and I loved the idea of having smaller course numbers and more tutor time than I felt I would get at a larger university. The facilities, such as the print room and light studio spaces really impressed me too!

What did you love most about the Illustration course at HCA?

I enjoyed so many things about HCA. We always had amazing and inspiring visiting illustrators and trips. The course is so well connected. Photoshop workshops were always a lot of fun under the illustration lecturer Nicholas Stevenson.

I also really loved seeing the different kinds of illustrators my friends developed into, and how supportive all the courses were of each other. Being part of ‘New Designers’ in 2018 was a great opportunity, and I was lucky enough to attract attention from Hallmark, Card Factory and Moonpig.

What is the best thing about studying in Hereford?

Hereford is a great city with a natural backdrop and history that just added to the experience for me. I always found the locals friendly. It gave me a chance to find a place for myself and do well.

What have you been up to since graduating?

I recently did a work placement at Moonpig creating a range of cards – Feral Cards – which was really exciting! Since then I’ve been invited to illustrate for the company again on a freelance basis. I want to keep learning and developing, so I’m debating a Masters for next year.
