“Nocturnal”

My name is Marika, and I am currently in my 1st year of studying BA Photography. Nighttime has a specific atmosphere to it, which is different from any other parts of the day. It is quiet and peaceful, somewhat uneasy with a sense of danger at the same time. From a point of view, of someone who enjoys the atmosphere of the night time, “Nocturnal” is a photographic observation of the space around us, the isolation within the outside world and the sense of longing for the warmth of the inside. It is the contrast of the light and the juxtaposition with the sense of peace and uneasiness, longing to be inside, yet craving the outside as well. It is the observation of little signs of life, people like me, “night owls”, being awake in the middle of the night when all the rest are asleep. It is a commentary on the ongoing pandemic, the emptiness of the outside space, people forced to stay home in order to keep each other safe. The isolation both out as within.
