Laura McCarthy (MA)MA Contemporary Crafts
Making things is a confirmation of existence. I create therefore I am. It is a way to maintain positivity in a world which can make this difficult sometimes. I seek to create aesthetic experience, an appreciation of the beauty in light and shadow, in nature and geometry. I am enjoying working with the most simple of materials- sheets of white paper- and of methods- folding. I am excited by the possibility of creating intricate three dimensional forms through such basic materials and processes. I love the democratic nature of paper folding; it is a technique that is open to everyone, even in lockdown, luckily for me.
Paper is also a material that is formed from organic matter and is recyclable. Left outside it will decompose and feed the earth. As artists we all have a duty to consider the environmental impact of our work.
