I am delighted to present the work of students from all three levels of study on our Contemporary Design Crafts and Jewellery Design Degree programmes here at Hereford College of Arts.

A few weeks ago, they were all asked to leave the studios and workshops behind them and take cover from Covid-19. It was clear that as ‘makers of stuff,’ this would potentially impact on the very core of design craft practice. Instead of retreating, our creative students left their own unique mark at this time. I am in awe of the work which has taken place over the last few months. Our students are strong, inventive, resilient and caring. They have shown real tenacity in adversity, producing myriad works both for the sake of their own creative output, but also for the benefit of others in the community, sharing stories and helping to save lives. They have challenged themselves to work online and reach new ways to engage with and communicate their learning. They have continued to utilise a diverse array of processes and in some cases even learnt new ones.

I have a simple message for you all. I could not be prouder of your capacity to adapt and problem solve. You have shown that creativity and indeed a creative education, is at the heart of what makes us human. This exhibition is a celebration of your work, produced in difficult circumstances. You are quite simply, extraordinary.
