Alex Gregory (L4)BA (Hons) Artist Blacksmithing

My grandparents were makers, so am I. Forging steel however, there’s something different about it. I believe Blacksmithing takes you back to a time where we didn’t have it as easy as we do now. If anything was made, it took skill and time. Hard work is important to me, I want that translated in my work.

I’m working on a project which explores the variation in volume that can be forged in Steel, inspired by modern street graffiti. Graffiti has been a lifelong interest of mine. The dedication and unique aesthetic to each writer’s hand style really interests me and always has done. I admire the risk artists take to promote their name: although it’s something I can’t do myself. My process is deeply ingrained in understanding how graffiti is written and capturing that in my work. This will give me a good understanding of working with irregularity and managing to master it. From here, I know in the future, I want to be a practicing artist blacksmith. Perhaps my experience in teaching will take me one way, or instead, my passion for creating and following my visions will take me in another.
