Being a maker is just who I am. I can’t imagine any other way. “At the beginning of the course we were asked what we hoped to get out of it, my answer was - to come out with a collection or two that I was really proud of and to have it displayed in galleries. And that happened.

My dad died during my studies and I inherited lots of toolboxes and tools. I realised that these toolboxes were not just from my dad but from long dead relatives and a big variety of crafts people, makers and menders. I have always loved tools as they give you the freedom of independence. I had no idea how busy New Designers would be but I knew I was going to have to dig deep. Standing and chatting about work for four days is hard for most – but my work is deeply personal and I wouldn’t have made it if had my dad not died, so chatting about that is tough.

It came as a massive surprise that so many people wanted to talk to me about my work. The whole experience has been so brilliant - a definite highlight of my life so far!

“HCA is a unique powerhouse of creative education that delivers transformational education across a huge range of subjects. This is evidenced by our students’ success at New Designers and beyond.”
Justin Gregory, Vice Principal of Higher Education
I had wanted to do a degree for a very long time but for various life, work and single parenting reasons I wasn’t able to. So to all the people wanting to, I would say take the leap and give yourself the opportunities you dream of. As a mature student, I was completely welcomed and felt like one of the team. It was also hard at times but a very good experience to be with people of all ages - it gives you a better understanding of people as a whole.”
