This Foundation Diploma and Portfolio Course is divided into 3 units.  In Unit 1 learners are encouraged to research, take risks and be brave. Unit 2 continues to promote personal exploration, progression and experimentation within this dynamic and creative environment.  Unit 4 of the course is the equivalent level of first year BA and places an increased emphasis on a consolidation of ideas, skills and processes, reinforced with critical evaluation and reflection. All students devise projects which are realised for final external assessment and public exhibition.

This year, this fast paced academic experience offered students the opportunity to explore many different teaching and learning strategies to their fullest, despite the challenges of Covid 19.  Each student remained engaged, and their tenacity and determination to remain committed to their practice demonstrated their resilience and individual creativity at the most difficult of times.

As you can see from the variety of work showcased and the progression information displayed, our student’s progress across a breadth of creative and academic pathways.  This show represents selected works from the student’s final project, written and realised over the last 12 weeks.

The Foundation Diploma Staff Team would like to congratulate all of the students on their energy, creativity and achievement over the duration of the course and wish them every success for their future plans.  The student work and final exhibition would not be possible without the help of our exceptional support staff, skilful technical demonstrators from our specialist workshops and the hard work and good spirits of the HCA maintenance team. Thank you all so much.

Foundation Diploma in Art & Design

My final project is based around the issues concerning the state of the planet and our social construct that has been massively impacted by human greed, negligence and xenophobia. These are issues that both interest and concern me and quite often are the influence and inspiration for my work.

My intention is that the spherical form of the sculptures is reminiscent of the planet, seeds, nucleus and that each piece will resonate with the audience allowing them to be subjective within the premise of my subject matter.

I chose to use non-sustainable materials and some recycled and natural materials in order to juxtapose the issues of mass production and over production of products and resources that might be better balanced if we could learn to offset what we take from the Earth and our fellow humans and evolve into a more conscious global community.

My work is based on the exploration of contrast in texture and colour from experiences, focusing mainly on photos taken from travelling in southern India. I have concentrated on only gathering information (drawings research and processes) that I find interesting. A lot of my work is based on the colour and ‘patchwork’ overlaying textures that many of the houses in Indian streets are built from. I created a series of prints to portray this.

Vauxhall Bridge was written on the well-known London Bridge, howeverreflects the serenity of being inside of a leaf basking in the sunlight. The river flows, swells and floods. Detritus and lost objects were strewn among the trees and river banks. The objects lost to the river over years are raised from the river bed and washed along in the high waters and flung back onto land as the levels subside. They have lived a life of their own, been marked and changed their form. Collectively the objects speak of escalating climate chaos while individually we can but imagine the stories behind a high-heeled shoe, severed bike lock, mans jumper, the tethered innards of a computer or a child’s scooter wheel.

Over three walks I collected 60 objects from a 600m stretch of the River Wye by the Canary Bridge in Hereford. My installation suspends the objects at the highest levels of the river over 60 months from January 2016 to February 2021. The highest ever recorded level is 6.11 metres on 17th February 2020.

“We have a record of 14 floods of over five metres in Hereford. Six have been since 2000, four have been in the last 18 months, two have been in the last month. Things are changing. Fast.” — Dave Throup, Environment Agency, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The experimentation led to the development of a visually ambiguous approach that aims to capture not just what the artist is drawn to but also to invite the viewer to consider their own interpretation.

Rebecca expresses her inner world and ideals through abstract expressionism. An intuitive painter, Rebecca was particularly drawn to the idea of art as communication, since she is neurodivergent (ASC) and feels that art can be a wonderful alternative route for communication for autistic people.

After ten years working in museums and galleries, Rebecca became a BACP registered counsellor/psychotherapist in 2012 and set up and ran a free counselling service in partnership with the University of Worcestershire until 2020. After being diagnosed with ME/CFS in 2019, she was drawn back to her creative roots and enrolled at Hereford College of Arts the following year.

Rebecca threw herself back into the art world without hesitation; the piece she made on her first day at college was shown in the Transitions exhibition at Espacio Gallery London in October 2020. This was followed by her work being selected to feature in a book about men’s mental health and a short film that she made about ME/CFS was selected for open screening at the Borderlines Film Festival 2021.

Although primarily focused on painting, Rebecca enjoys working in other mediums, such as small metals, photography, textiles and film making. Rebecca has a particular interest in chromatics, pattern, texture and illusion.
